There are three main types of hand-guided plate compactors based on movement and operation: forward plate compactors, reversible plate compactors, and heavy-duty/high-frequency models. They are also categorized by power source as gasoline, diesel, or electric, plus special attachment versions for excavators.
Main Operational Types
  • Forward plate compactors: Move in one direction only. They are light, easy to use, and best for small jobs like paths or patios.
  • Reversible plate compactors: Move both forward and backward. They offer better control, deeper compaction force, and fit tight spaces.
  • Heavy-duty plate compactors: Built for large commercial sites and deep, stubborn soil layers.
Power Source Types
  • Gasoline/Petrol: Common for standard portable construction use.
  • Diesel: Used for heavier industrial projects.
  • Electric: Corded or battery-powered options for indoor or low-emission spaces. 

 
Forward Plate Compactors
  • Lightweight design usually under 120 kg, moving exclusively in a forward direction.
  • Best for thin granular layers, sand, sub-base preparation, and interlocking pavers.
  • High maneuverability in narrow residential landscaping or tight footprint patches.
  • Powered typically by smaller 4.8 kW to 6.5 kW gasoline engines. 
Reversible Plate Compactors
  • Dual-direction control (forward and backward) for efficient operation without manual turning.
  • Medium to heavy weight class (160 kg to over 400 kg) providing greater centrifugal force.
  • Ideal for deep foundation backfills, trench work, and thick cohesive or granular soil layers.
  • Better long-term productivity on commercial civil infrastructure and road base setups. 
Heavy-Duty and High-Frequency Models
  • Massive operating weights exceeding 400 kg up to 700+ kg with centrifugal forces over 50 kN.
  • High vibration frequencies (often 4,400+ VPM or specialized high Hz ratings) to fluidize stubborn aggregates.
  • Engineered for rigorous industrial sites, major road construction, highway work, and thick asphalt or deep sub-base layers.
  • Commonly powered by heavy-duty diesel configurations (such as Yanmar or Hatz engines) for continuous high-load output.
